Geneva, Switzerland - March 16, 2018
Jaguar took the wraps off the production I-Pace at the Geneva auto show.
If it looks familiar that’s because the car is virtually identical to the concept car precursor of the same name that made its debut in late 2016.
It’s quite an achievement, but one that was considered from the program outset.
The I-Pace project started as a vision for what the future could look like for the brand.
As Tesla products have blazed the path of desirability for electric cars - once seen as a choice for environmentalists – it’s now clear that the future of the automobile is electric.
Not only are they more environmentally efficient, but their performance capabilities and packaging has proven to be superior to conventional front-engine cars.
When a company is also ready to take on the establishment head-on and create a design that’s original, well balanced and practical based on the aforementioned criteria, it’s a recipe for success.

Having your work praised by other designers is a highlight to any automotive designer’s career. That’s why there are so many design awards out there.
The Jaguar I-Pace has been recognized by industry leaders as pushing forward a new aesthetic - FCA’s global head of design Ralph Gilles says he’s a “big fan” while Geely head of design Peter Horbury said it showcases the opportunities afforded to electric cars “beautifully”.
Even former BMW Group design chief Chris Bangle – often a critic of the state of the car design industry – calls it “really nice” (mostly due to its proportions and wheel to body ratio).

Flower throwing aside, there’s a lot to get excited about.

It’s got a nice stance - its large wheels sit far into the corners - and its exterior appearance is athletic without being overly aggressive.
From the front, the I-Pace DRG is recognizable as a Jaguar.

The LED headlights - incorporating the brand’s distinctive ‘double J’ graphic - flank the large oval shaped grille, which appears a superfluous element but is said to act in unison with the hood scoop to channel air and enhance aerodynamics and cooling.
The front fenders flow elegantly off the top of the lamps, giving the car a muscular identity.

The DLO drops down just behind the A-pillar before rising upwards to the higher plane of the tail, which gives it a pouncing character perfectly in line with the Jaguar brand.
The fluid surfacing of the bodyside is clean and elegant, as a Jaguar should be, underlined by a lower element across the doors to subtract visual mass.

The cut off rear end, which was developed to improve airflow and reduce aero drag, also incorporates Jaguar’s definitive long taillamps with a ‘drop down’ element below the very short decklid and slim backlight.
The I-Pace has a 2990mm wheelbase, which is long relative to its 4682mm overall length.

The cab-forward nature of the car was created to enhance the feeling of spaciousness within.
The A-pillars intersect far further forward than on a traditional luxury car, which enabled the design team to move the front seats forward and optimize cabin space.

Thanks to its electric architecture, the Jaguar I-Pace is also practical inside.
As there’s no tunnel for the transmission designers have been able to include a 10-liter stowage compartment in the front, with a near flat floor in the rear and 890mm of rear legroom.
The overall feel from the interior is one of open airiness, thanks in part to the low IP, generous panoramic roof and open areas, such as the arch-like front of the center console.
Featuring large dials and buttons to complement the center touchscreen above (there’s also voice control on offer), it stands separately from the main IP.
This separation almost allows it to take on a sculptural significance, like a piece of artwork in a living room.
While the car can comfortably seat five adults, Jaguar design director Ian Callum says he wanted to give the car real attitude.
“[It’s] a very practical car,” Callum says, citing he “wanted to give the car a certain attitude that a Jaguar should have.”
That goes for the exterior design as well as the interior.

In the I-Pace Jaguar designers have also upped the level of craftsmanship, which can be seen in the carbon fiber, wood and aluminum elements.
The thin leather covering the digital gauge pack and the seats is finished with a fine cross colored stitch, with a small ‘Jaguar Est 1935 Coventry’ label sown in.

Callum says the I-Pace is a car that can be defined as embodying character, a bit of assertiveness, and elegance.
“A Jaguar should always be elegant,” he says.
“It’s got attitude, it’s got stance, and it’s beautiful.”
